Near Absolute Zero

Near absolute zero, where all thermal motion stops, quantum effects become manifest. Sayantani Ghosh and Raghu Parthasarathy, working in the Rosenbaum group, use a helium dilution refrigerator to reach temperatures within a few thousandths of a degree of absolute zero. They are interested in the electrical, magnetic, and optical response of new classes of materials. (Here a plume of cold gas shoots out from a liquid storage helium dewar.)
