The University of Chicago Materials Center REU Program, with support from the National Science Foundation, offers the opportunity to gain valuable research experience working with faculty members from the Departments of Chemistry, Geophysics, Mathematics, and Physics. Interdisciplinary approaches to cutting edge materials problems will be emphasized. Supplementing this practical experience, faculty and graduate students present special lectures to provide an overview of the wide-ranging research throughout the Center. Six to eight internships will be awarded for the ten-week program, June 16 through August 22, 2003. The stipend for the full ten-week program will be $4,000. Housing will be provided, and there will be modest travel expense reimbursement.
Possible research areas include:
- Catalysis and Corrosion
- Interface Motion and Singularities
- Metal-Insulator Transitions
- Nanoscale Electronics
- Phonon Spectroscopy
- Polymers and Glasses
- Quantum Dots and Arrays
- Sandpiles and Avalanches
FYI - Research descriptions and selected publications of theoretical and experimental UChicago condensed matter physicists.
