First Steps Toward Realizing Nonreciprocal Matter with Acoustic Levitation

Heinrich Jaeger, UChicago

Reciprocity is one of the key principles in physics: for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. What if this principle is violated? What are the properties of a state of matter governed by nonreciprocity? This colloquium discusses experiments that use ensembles of ultrasonically levitated microparticles to create physical manifestations of nonreciprocal matter and explores how nonreciprocity can bring about emergent active behavior.
