Dear Prospective University of Chicago Physics Graduate Student:
The University of Chicago Physics Department is excited to welcome you to the 2020 Prospective Graduate Student Open House on Friday, March 13th, 2020! The schedule of events for the Open House is described below.
The primary purpose of the Open House is for you to interact with and get to know the faculty, current graduate students, and postdoctoral and research staff with whom you would work at UChicago; to get a sense of what it's like to be part of the vibrant UChicago community; and to get a taste of the great city of Chicago.
Open House Schedule
Thursday, March 12th:
— 3:00 - 3:30 pm: Refreshments (KPTC 206)
— 6:30 - 8:30 pm: Prospective Graduate Student Reception at the home of Profs. Young-Kee Kim and Sidney Nagel (4913 S. Kimbark Ave.)
Friday, March 13th:
— 8:30 - 9:30 am: Breakfast and Welcome from the Physics Department Chair Prof. Young-Kee Kim (Quadrangle Club)
— 9:45 am - 12:30 pm: Research Overviews & one-on-one faculty meetings
— 12:30 - 2:00 pm: Lunch with current graduate students (GCIS Atrium)
— 2:00 - 4:30 pm: One-on-one faculty meetings
— 4:30 - 6:00 pm: Reception and poster session with students, postdocs and faculty (KPTC)
— 7:00 - 9:00 pm: Dinner for prospective graduate students and invited faculty at Eataly downtown
Saturday, March 14th:
— 10:00 am - 12:00 pm: Women and gender minorities in Physics Brunch. All are welcome to attend this event focused on discussing the environment for women and gender minorities at the University of Chicago.
If you plan to visit the Physics Open House, please be sure to RSVP by February 15th so that we can arrange for your lodging. Access the RSVP form from your admissions letter in the online application system. If you have any dietary restrictions or require special accommodations, please let us know at that time so we can make your stay in Chicago as comfortable as possible.

If you visit on our Open House day, (Friday, March 13th), we will reimburse your travel expenses up to $400. In addition, we will provide housing accommodations at the Hyatt Place Chicago South / University Medical Center in Hyde Park for the nights of Thursday, March 12th and Friday, March 13th. Check in at the hotel is at 3 pm. If you wish to stay longer, please make your own arrangements.
