Intersections Between Fluid Dynamics, Physical Chemistry, and Biological Physics
Howard Stone, Princeton
Faculty Host: Heinrich Jaeger
The principles of fluid dynamics are relevant to a wide range of problems. I will introduce the talk with a number of illustrations demonstrating both the surprises and beauty of fluid dynamical phenomena.
I will then proceed to describe 1) the architecture and internal fluid flows of mycorrhizal fungi that grow underground (where they interact with most agricultural plants), 2) the movement of colloidal particles due to chemical gradients, a phenomenon called diffusiophoresis, and 3) some of the roles of interfacial tension for understanding cellular-scale biophysics associated with biological condensates.
