Grand Challenges in Accelerator and Beam Physics
Sergei Nagaitsev, Fermilab and University of Chicago
Since their appearance in the first half of the twentieth century, particle accelerators propelled and supported extraordinary scientific discoveries in nuclear and elementary particle physics, materials science, biology and other fields. This talk will briefly highlight the main scientific accomplishments in accelerator and beam physics. It will then focus on the science and technology gaps that constitute the "Grand Challenges" of accelerator and beam physics to be addressed by the present and next generations of accelerator scientists and will place the UChicago accelerator research into this global context.
