Where Science Meets Story
Katrina Miller, New York Times
Growing up, writing was my way of making sense of the world around me. It wasn't until college, when I took my first physics course, that I stumbled across another lens through which to explore the universe. At the time, I had no idea how few Black women had ventured down this path nor how my identity would often shape my experience in the field more than my potential as a budding scientist. Physics, it turned out, would ultimately lead me back to my roots as a writer.
In this talk, I will share my journey from researcher to reporter and how my scientific training prepared me surprisingly well for a career in journalism, as both fields rely on open-minded inquiry in search of truth. I will also explore how science is full of story, and how, in any story, there is science waiting to be uncovered.
