Mediated Interactions in Cold Atom Physics

Professor Chin's group make first observation of mediated interactions with cold atoms

In work newly published in Nature, Professor Chin and former postdoctural researcher Brian DeSalvo, report the observation of interaction between bosonic atoms mediated by an atomic Fermi sea. Such mediated interactions are commonplace in magnetic materials and in particle physics but have not previously been observed in cold atoms. Their work is supported by Chicago MRSEC and NSF as well as the Department's Grainger Postdoctoral Fellowship.
